Commercial Insurance Guide
Plain-language answers about the coverage your business needs.
The main types of business coverage
General liability
Pays for claims that your business injured someone or damaged their property, like a customer slipping in your store. Most landlords and clients ask for it.
Business owner’s policy (BOP)
Bundles general liability and commercial property into one policy, usually at a lower price than buying them separately. A good fit for many small offices, shops and restaurants.
Commercial property
Covers your building, equipment, furniture and inventory against fire, theft and other covered losses. Flood usually needs a separate policy.
Workers’ compensation
Pays medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt on the job. In Florida, construction businesses generally need it with even one employee, and most other businesses need it with four or more employees.
Commercial auto
Covers vehicles your business owns or uses. Personal auto policies often exclude business use.
Professional liability (errors and omissions)
Protects you if a client says your advice or service caused them a financial loss. Common for consultants, real estate, tax and beauty professionals.
Umbrella or excess liability
Adds extra liability limits on top of your other policies for large claims.
Tools, equipment and builders risk
Inland marine covers tools and equipment that move between job sites. Builders risk covers a building while it is under construction.
