Bobtail Insurance
Understand driving a tractor without a trailer and why bobtail and non-trucking liability are not interchangeable.

Bobtail describes the truck configuration
Bobtail commonly means operating a tractor without an attached trailer. That description alone does not tell you whether the trip is insured. Insurers can use the term differently, so read the actual coverage form and endorsements.
The reason for the trip, dispatch status, lease arrangement and business use can matter. Do not assume that dropping a trailer changes a business trip into personal use.
Non-trucking liability asks a different question
Non-trucking liability (NTL) is intended for certain non-business uses of an eligible commercial truck, subject to its policy definitions and exclusions. It is not automatically the same as bobtail protection.
For example, a tractor traveling without a trailer while performing a business task may need a different coverage analysis from a personal errand. An agent should review the circumstances and insurer form, rather than rely on the label alone.
Keep liability, vehicle damage and freight separate
- Primary auto liability: certain covered third-party injury or property damage claims.
- Physical damage: covered damage to an insured truck or trailer.
- Motor truck cargo: eligible freight losses, subject to commodity restrictions and conditions.
None of these names by itself confirms that a particular trip or loss is covered.
What to bring for a policy review
- Your lease agreement, declarations and endorsements.
- A clear description of dispatched, non-dispatched and personal use.
- Vehicle, driver, operating radius and authority details.
- Contractual requirements and the loads you carry.
Does removing the trailer guarantee coverage?
No. The insurer’s form and the circumstances control.
Can I replace primary liability with NTL?
NTL does not replace primary liability for business operations.
Should I ask about each policy separately?
Yes. Ask an agent to explain the intended use, exclusions and relationship between the policies.
General education only. Policy language, limits, exclusions, underwriting and state law control. A website inquiry does not bind or change coverage.
Reference: Progressive Commercial: non-trucking liability.
